Where India’s startup leadership talent concentrates
Leadership hiring is different at a startup
A great VP at a large company isn’t automatically a great VP at a 75-person startup.
Startups need leaders who can make decisions without complete information, build teams before processes exist, work closely with founders and still stay hands-on when required.
We build every startup leadership search around the stage of the company, the founder’s expectations, the role’s actual mandate and what needs to be achieved over the next 12–24 months.
The right leadership hire depends on where your company is today.
1.Building the Founding Leadership Team
You have product-market fit and are beginning to build the leadership layer around the founders.
2. Scaling from Series A to Series B
The business is growing quickly and founders can no longer own every function themselves.
3. Scaling from Series B to Series C
The leadership challenge changes from building the function to building an organisation that can scale without founder dependency.
4.Leadership Upgrade & Succession
Sometimes the person who helped build the first version of the business isn’t the person you need for the next stage.
We help founders and boards identify leaders who can take the organisation from its current scale to where it needs to be.

Why Founders Work With Us
1. We Start With the Business Problem
Before discussing candidates, we understand what is actually broken, what needs to change and what success looks like 12–24 months from now. A requirement such as "we need a VP Engineering" is only the starting point.
We need to understand whether you need a builder, an operator, a transformation leader, a technical strategist, or some combination of these.
2. We Hire for the Next Stage
A leader who thrived at a 2,000-person company can struggle with a 40-person team and no playbook. We assess candidates for the stage you will be at in 18 months, so your new hire grows with the business instead of being outgrown by it.
3. Full-time or Fractional, Based on Your Runway
Many D2C and B2C founders need senior marketing leadership before they can justify a full-time CMO salary. We place fractional CMOs who set strategy, build the team and hand over to a full-time leader when the numbers support it. Some of those fractional leaders become the full-time hire.
4. Compensation That Works With ESOPs
Startup offers balance cash, ESOPs and the story of where the company is going. We benchmark against comparable startup hires, help you structure the offer, and manage the counter-offer conversation that almost every strong candidate will face. Read our guide on compensation benchmarking in India.
5. We Help Founders Make the Decision
We provide comparative insight into each candidate's strengths, risks, motivation, stage fit and likely areas of concern.
6. We Stay Involved Beyond the Offer
Closing a senior leader is only half the job.
We support compensation discussions, offer closure and early integration so that expectations between the founder and incoming leader are aligned before day one.
7. Your Story Reaches Leaders Who Are Not Looking
The best VP Engineering or Head of Growth is usually employed and doing well. Senior candidates check your Glassdoor, LinkedIn and founder interviews before they take a call. We carry your story to them directly, and where the employer brand needs work, our talent branding practice can help.
What We Look For in Startup Leaders
Beyond the CV
A startup leadership search cannot be reduced to years of experience or the companies on someone’s résumé.
We look at whether a candidate has demonstrated the behaviours your stage of business actually requires.
Builder mindset
Has this person built something before or mainly operated something that already existed?
Ownership
Will they take responsibility for the outcome, or wait for someone else to solve the problem?
Comfort with ambiguity
Can they make good decisions when the data is incomplete and there is no established playbook?
Founder compatibility
Can they challenge the founder constructively, earn trust and operate independently without creating unnecessary friction?
Team-building ability
Can they attract strong people, make difficult hiring decisions and build a team that is stronger than themselves?
Stage fit
Has the candidate succeeded at a company of your size and complexity or are you hiring them primarily because of their experience at a much larger organisation?
Every mandate starts with a conversation.
Speak directly with a Managing Partner about your organisation, leadership requirement and timeline.

Our India Market Entry Search Process
- Founder Consultation. We start with the founders, and where useful your board or lead investor, to understand the role, what success looks like in the first year, and what cannot be compromised.
- Success Profile & Market Mapping. We turn the brief into a success profile and map leaders across funded startups, consumer brands and larger companies that have produced the talent you need.
- Discreet Outreach & Engagement. We approach active and passive candidates through confidential conversations, with an honest picture of your stage, runway and challenges.
- Deep-dive Assessment. Candidates are assessed for functional depth, judgement, culture contribution and startup readiness: building teams from scratch, working without a playbook, and operating close to founders.
- Shortlist and Decision Support. You get a focused shortlist with comparative insight. We support interviews, references, compensation and ESOP discussions, counter-offers and offer closure.
- Onboarding and Integration. The search ends with a 100-day plan for the new leader and the founder, covering team building, stakeholder alignment and early wins.
FAQs About Executive Search in India
How is executive search for startups different from hiring at larger companies?
The biggest difference is the operating environment.
Startup leaders typically need to work with fewer resources, less structure and greater uncertainty. They may need to build the strategy, hire the team and execute the work themselves.
A candidate's success at a large company therefore does not automatically translate into startup success.
Should a startup hire someone from another startup or a large company?
Either can work.
The more important question is whether the candidate has operated successfully in an environment similar to the one they are entering.
A large-company executive who has previously built a function from scratch may be a stronger startup candidate than someone who has spent their entire career in startups but has never operated at the required scale.
How long does startup executive search take?
The timeline depends on the role, seniority, market and availability of suitable candidates.
A focused shortlist can often be developed within the first few weeks, while complex CXO searches may take longer because the right candidates are usually passive and require a more deliberate engagement process.
Can you help a founder define the role before starting the search?
Yes.
In many cases, this is the most important part of the engagement.
If the leadership mandate is unclear, the search can quickly become a collection of impressive but unsuitable candidates. We help define the business outcomes, decision rights, success measures and leadership characteristics before going to market.
